Reinforcements

Reinforcements in Sight!!!  

One thing about playing a period, even IF you have a ton of painted figures already, you can always find ways to add more.  It is one of the best parts of the hobby.  One of the things I found in the Strategic Lead Reserve was a group of Trapezitoi.  They are a mix of Citadel Dark Ages and Hinchliffe guys.  I added a Minifigs Dragon Standard.  The fact that WAB gives them a WS 4 means they are a good "battle cavalry" unit for chasing down other light cavalry, but the fact they have no armor gives them very little staying power against any armored cavalry - especially Sassanid Clibanarii with horse armor.  Nonetheless, these guys are a good unit that can be used to clear or protect the flanks of the army.

Concept figure for my unit of Belisarian Light Cavalry. These are 1980s Perry sculpts. Originally they had lead spears where the piano wire is now. Not great figures, but not bad ones either & they will fit w/my mostly Minifigs Belisarians.

The completed unit.  Turned out ok I thought.  I like the shields and they will make a pretty unit on the tabletop.

Two Sides of a River Scenario (played on 14 November 2020) Belisarian Byzantines vs Sassanids. Scott had to clear out a river valley that I was defending. He had 2,000 points & I had 1750. We each took 300 points of characters. I was holding the bridge. The bulk of my army was on the North bank of the river (was was unfordable). Scott got to choose which side of the valley he would advance down after I deployed. He could not split forces. It was a good fight and the issue was in doubt until the very end. Kudos to Scott for a solid victory.   My army deployed on the on both sides of the bridge. The bulk had to deploy on the north side of the river. I had two units of Psiloi, the yellow shielded infantry in the center are dismounted Kataphraktoi with the Bucellarii and the general behind them (EHC) and a unit of x10 Goth HC on the north side. Pass Clearance (3 January 2021) Pass Clearance. Belisarians 1,750 points - Sassanids 1,250 points. We decided to play twelve turns and the game ended in a slim Sassanid victory.  Looking back on it, I think I was too timid with my Kataphraktoi early on in the game.  I did not want my expensive cavalry shot up by a bunch of Sassanid light troops, and thought I could win an archery duel with my Skutatioi, Huns, and Psiloi before bringing the elite Kataphraktoi and Goth HC to bear on the Sassanid Clibanarii and medium infantry.  As it turned out I lost every archery duel I fought.  To be fair, on this day I rolled HORRIBLY for saving throws while Scott rolled really well.  But still, I should have pressed with all my elite cavalry earlier than I did.  It was a really good game and a fun way to spend an afternoon with pretty figures on a nice table.   The terrain for this iteration of the scenario was different than the first time we played it.  Crossing Point (26 December 2020) This is Scenario Six from Charles Grant's book on Programmed Wargame Scenarios.  River Crossing scenario from Charles Grant’s book. Sassanids were the attackers at 1,750 points vs Belisarian defenders at 1,500 points. The Belisarians had 30% of their troops on the board at the beginning & had to wait for reinforcements until turn 10 (!!), and then I had to roll a 6 on a D6 for my reinforcements to show up. Scott’s army came In piecemeal as well. The game ran for 14 turns before we called it a draw.   The battlefield w/the Byzantines deployed n the south side of an unfordable river. I picked two units of Skutatoi and a unit of Psiloi to start on the table.   These Ewoldt figures are for his Nikephorian army, but are close enough to work for my Belisarians until I get my Belisarian Skutatoi done.     The Byzantine advanced guard holds the bridge.     Scott’s army had to come on in random order...
